In an easy-to-use dashboard, this new tool pulls together existing data to measure social vulnerability and equity gaps at the community level while providing context about the varying needs of different communities. To measure these concepts, in the summer of 2020, the Census Bureau launched the 2019 Community Resilience Estimates (CRE) to measure social vulnerability. This information was combined with data from other sources such as the American Community Survey and the Census Bureau’s Planning Database. Providing all this information in one dataset allows users quick access to the data on a variety of topics concerning social vulnerability and equity unlike any other measures.

  • In September, a working paper, Meatpacking Working Conditions and Spread of COVID-19 was released. Data from the Occupational Information Network (O*NET) was used to construct a set of industry-level working condition variables and compare meatpacking to the sample of other manufacturing industries in our comparison group. This novel approach showed that proximity to others in the meatpacking industry is likely the main factor that influenced the spread of COVID-19, nearly three standard deviations higher in meatpacking than our comparison sample of other manufacturing industries. Overall exposure to disease was also found to be 2.5 standard deviations higher in the meatpacking industry compared to other manufacturing industries.
  • In September, Household Food Security in the US in 2020 was released. In 2020, 89.5 percent of U.S. households were food secure. The remaining 10.5 percent (13.8 million households) were food insecure. Food-insecure households (those with low and very low food security) had difficulty at some time during the year providing enough food for all their members because of a lack of resources. The 2020 prevalence of food insecurity was unchanged from 10.5 percent in 2019. In 2020, 3.9 percent of U.S. households (5.1 million households) had very low food security, not significantly different from 4.1 percent in 2019. In this more severe range of food insecurity, the food intake of some household members was reduced, and normal eating patterns were disrupted at times during the year because of limited resources.

Indonesia’s total primary energy consumption grew by 16% between 2010 and 20203. The country’s petroleum share, although decreasing since 2018, accounted for the second-highest portion of Indonesia’s energy mix at 32% in 20204. Between 2010 and 2019, use of coal more than doubled. Surpassing natural gas as the less expensive fuel during that time, domestically produced coal became more economically attractive.

  • • On September 2, a working paper on Understanding Unsuccessful Innovation was released. To better understand causes and patterns of unsuccessful or failed innovation within firms, we conducted 19 case studies of failure from the past 20 years. These cases draw primarily from coverage by the popular and trade presses and highlight clear models of failure. This paper examines all aspects of the product or business process life cycle and found that innovation failure typically revolves around firms’ inadequate pre-launch development activities, which lead to products that do not function properly or in which the marketplace has no interest. There is a gap between innovation, market-specific product launch, and successful innovation as typically presented in the literature. This paper exploits this gap and identifies those products and processes that are introduced but fail to achieve widespread adoption as unsuccessful innovation or innovation failures.
