NCHS released updated provisional life expectancy estimates for January–December 2020. Life expectancy at birth in the United States declined 1.5 years from 2019 to 2020. This drop was the largest one-year decline in the United States since World War II.

Among race and Hispanic origin groups in the United States, the largest decline in life expectancy occurred among Hispanic people. The second largest decline was for non-Hispanic Black people.
